Tailgate Horseshoes Half Board Rules

Set Up

Place Tailgate Horseshoe Boards about 20 feet apart. One set of discs to each person or team. Each person tosses one disc toward the same board from anywhere behind the front of the other board. The closest one to the hole, on or off the base goes first.

Rules for Play

For 2 players: Both players toss from behind the front of the same board toward the other board, aiming for the board. One person tosses all three of their discs, leaving them where they fall. The other person then tosses all three of their discs. Where the discs finally land after all players have taken their turn is where they are scored. It is to a player's advantage to be the first to toss. The person who scores (or previously went first, as points do not have to be scored every turn) goes first in the next turn. They have "honors". After each turn, players switch sides to toss at the board they previously tossed from.

For 4 players: Team members stand opposite to each other and no one switches sides. Opponents should be paired according to skill. (The two that are the most skilled should toss against each other, that is, from the same side.)

Scoring

The game is played to 21, winning by 2. Scoring each round is an "all-or-nothing" situation for each player/team. The player with the most points in each round adds that amount to their total score. The other player gets no points added to their total score. Only one player can score per round! If the score happens to be tied in a round, it is considered a "push" and neither team receives any points.

Points are scored as follows:

On the base - 1 point

Leaning in the hole ("leaner") - 2 points

In the hole ("ringer") - 3 points
